The Way of Wisdom: Proverbs 9

Wisdom gives an invitation in Proverbs 9. (Click on the link to read today’s Scripture.)

Wisdom has built her house;
she has hewn her seven pillars.
She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed her wine;
she has also set her table.
 She has sent out her young women to call
from the highest places in the town,
 “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!”
To him who lacks sense she says,
 “Come, eat of my bread
and drink of the wine I have mixed.
Leave your simple ways, and live,
and walk in the way of insight.”

Proverbs 9:1-5

A few days ago I was invited to a neighbor’s house. It was a round about invitation through a mutual friend to come to the neighbor’s for an open house. I’ve walked and driven by their home hundreds of times, and I always admired the entrance sign. It reads Last Lap Farm, complete with red headed  buzzards made of metal. From the road you can’t see much, their home hidden behind the trees. Left to myself, my introverted self, I would have probably never met these neighbors face to face.

My daughter and I decided to stop by the open house on our way to Tyler. What we experienced was incredible. Nestled back in the trees my neighbors have worked to create an incredible home and barn where they craft furniture and home decor with simplistic beauty I find difficult to describe. As we joined the others she came to greet us and hugged me with her cheek pressed to mine, You’re the neighbor, she said.

There’s something about this place I can’t stop thinking about. As I stood there I looked at her old worn picnic table and thought, I would love to sit there with her and listen to her story. What wise and wonderful things I might learn. I was surprised by my thoughts.

I imagine this is what it is like to answer Wisdom’s invitation. Wisdom has built her house, complete in every way. She has prepared a feast, and sent the invitation out. Come to my home. Come you who are simple, who lack sense, and feast with me.

How will you answer Wisdom’s invitation today?

Yes, Lord! I choose to feast in the home of wisdom and not the house of folly.
