The Way of Wisdom: Proverbs 8

Proverbs 8 reveals wisdom was there in the beginning as God created. (Click on the link to read all about it.)

“The Lord possessed me at the beginning of his work,
the first of his acts of old.
Ages ago I was set up,
at the first, before the beginning of the earth.
When there were no depths I was brought forth,
when there were no springs abounding with water.
Before the mountains had been shaped,
before the hills, I was brought forth,
before he had made the earth with its fields,
or the first of the dust of the world.
When he established the heavens, I was there;
when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,
when he made firm the skies above,
when he established the fountains of the deep,
when he assigned to the sea its limit,
so that the waters might not transgress his command,
when he marked out the foundations of the earth,
then I was beside him, like a master workman,
and I was daily his delight,
rejoicing before him always,
rejoicing in his inhabited world
and delighting in the children of man.

Proverbs 8:22-31

I’m taken aback by the images revealed in these words.

God possessed wisdom in the beginning, ages ago, before creation.

Before the depths of the sea and mountain heights were established…

Before even a speck of dust existed…

Wisdom was like a master workman God delighted in daily. Wisdom rejoiced before God and in us.

Imagine for a moment as God rejoiced in the creative process, the making of a tree, or a whale. The tiny ant worked, the gigantic ears of an elephant unfolded. All of heaven rejoiced in creation and yet there was more to come. The pinnacle of creation climaxed as God formed dust into flesh, and the first breath rushed into the first set of lungs.

And on the seventh day our wise God delighted in the inhabited world and the children of man.

I’m moved to raise hands high in praise of the One who made it all. Won’t you join me?

I praise You, God: Father, Son, Spirit. Your wisdom, Your delight, with which You created. Your vision and genius in everything from the cellular to the cosmic. Your love seen in the elaborate place You made for us to dwell speaks volumes to who You are.

For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made.
