The Way of Wisdom: Proverbs 16

It’s Wednesday and we’re halfway through this week. Let’s read Proverbs 16. (Click on the link if you don’t have a bible handy.)

The plans of the heart belong to man,
but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.
All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes,
but the Lord weighs the spirit.
Commit your work to the Lord,
and your plans will be established.
The heart of man plans his way,
but the Lord establishes his steps.–vs. 1-3, 9

I am a planner more realistically a control freak. I constantly have a list of things to “get done”. I worry about how I will do it all. I panic at the thought of failure. I rush toward the goal as quickly possible. And if/when my plans are disrupted I feel as though my world is crumbling to the ground.

With this “My way or the Highway” attitude, I rob God of his plans for me.  The voice of the world tells me that success is avoiding failure… getting to my goal as quickly as possible.

But If I choose His way, there is joy to be found in the actual journey toward the goal. Yes, the journey will most likely be longer, with obstacles to overcome and fears to face. Through it all He is with me, refining me, helping me grow from the successes and the failures into the person He created me to be.

Lord, why would I not commit my plans to you? When I start to wander off of the path you have laid out before me, or when I am tempted to take a way that I think is easier, please guide me back to you. Give me the courage to look past my way and put total trust in you and your plans for me. Amen.
