The Way of Wisdom: Proverbs 13

Please forgive the delay today. We continue our wisdom way with the reading of Proverbs 13. (Click on the link to read the Scripture.)

Those who control their tongue will have a long life, opening your mouth can ruin everything.

Proverbs 13:3

Why are we so surprised that one small part of the body can carry so much weight… cause so much damage… ruin everything? Our Creator SPOKE us into existence, and left us his very Word to live by!

James compared the tongue to the bit in a horse’s mouth and the rudder on a ship steering the way, and even a fire corrupting the body and setting the whole course of one’s life on fire (James 3:4-6).

He called out the hypocrisy of Believers saying:

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.

James 3:9-10

Sometimes the words seem careless, like joining in on the latest gossip. Other times the words are fueled with anger, delivered with a punch, leaving a path of destruction. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.

How different would our conversations be if we filtered every word through our relationship with Jesus Christ? Would we listen more and talk less? (James 1:19) choose words full of grace and love that are made for building up instead of tearing down? (Ephesians 4:29)

Heavenly Father, May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. Amen. (Psalm 19:14)
