Songs of Praise: Psalm 113-115

We continue today with Psalm 113-115. (Click on the link or turn to the verses in your Bible.)

Their idols are silver and gold,
the work of human hands.
They have mouths, but do not speak;
eyes, but do not see.
They have ears, but do not hear;
noses, but do not smell.
They have hands, but do not feel;
feet, but do not walk;
and they do not make a sound in their throat.
Those who make them become like them;
so do all who trust in them.

Psalm 115:4-8

I’m reading along, nodding my head. It makes sense. Nothing we make, decide to worship has any life-like qualities. They can’t speak or see. Idols don’t hear my cries or feel my pain. No idol has ever taken one step. I get it. Idols have no life in them.

If that were the end of it, I would still be shaking my head, yes. But, the last line stopped me dead in my tracks. What? I read it again.

Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust them. The them being idols.

Wait. Let me get this straight. Though the idols I create in my life are blind, deaf, mute, and dumb, I can become like them?! Uhhh… NO! Not something I want to happen.

So I ask myself. I ask God. What idols are in my life? What needs to go, because I never, not ever, want to be like them.

What about you? Are there idols you’ve been hanging on to? Is there some resemblance you’ve noticed? Are you becoming blind and deaf to Truth? Has your mouth ceased to praise God?

Maybe today is the day to lay them down.

Father God, I do not want to become lifeless like man-made idols. Reveal the things I’ve placed before You. The things I trust in more than You. Help me remove them from my life.
