Songs of Praise: Psalms 127-130

We continue with the songs of praise. Read Psalm 127-130. (Click on the link to read God’s Word.)

Unless the Lord builds the house,
those who build it labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the watchman stays awake in vain.

It is in vain that you rise up early
and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious toil;
for he gives to his beloved sleep.

Psalm 127:1-2

The way of our world, our culture is restless. We hear the constant message to build. Build your home, your family, your business, your bank account. Build connections, portfolios and future.

The early bird gets the worm!

I can sleep when I die, comes from the loved one I hold dear.

Work, work, work. Day after day. Get up early, go to bed late. For what? When our final day comes, only two things matter. REALLY matter. And it doesn’t seem like we ever get anxious about those two things.

Loving God, loving others. These are the two that last for eternity. Instead, we work and build and become so anxious no sleep can be found.  Read the last verse again.

for he gives to his beloved sleep.

How are you sleeping these days? Is it time to take a hard look at your work? What you’re building?

Maybe it is time to let go of vain labor and wait. Wait and watch for the Lord to work His wonders in our lives. Maybe it is time to build our hope in His Word.

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
and in his word I hope;
my soul waits for the Lord
more than watchmen for the morning,
more than watchmen for the morning.

Psalm 130:5-6
