Songs of Praise: Psalm 49

Psalm 49

I went for a walk this morning. Lovely day, temperate and full of sunshine. I began to notice how my eyes were constantly moving and assessing my progress. Sometimes I watched the road checking for things I might trip over or maybe a snake lurking in the grass. Sometimes I watched the view ahead making sure no cars were coming or noticing a beautiful scene off to the side, the sun shining on the lake. But seldom did I look up. Seems like everything I need to see is right in front of me and I kind of take the sky for granted. Yep… it’s blue.

What the psalmist tells us today, reminds us we can easily get caught up in just seeing what’s in front of us in life, in the day to day pressures to succeed, make money, earn human fame and prestige. We gauge ourselves by others’ standards instead of God’s standards, thinking wealth and fame are going to bring us to the happiness we are missing. So we huff and puff. Walk a little faster. Push harder. Sweat a little more. Because more is what it’s all about.

This psalm hits hard. A real jolt straight to the heart of the matter. A reminder of where we need to focus our lives and our attention. It’s a call to consider the bigger picture, the best picture, the one God wants us to see and to have.

What does eternity mean to you? How does your answer to that and your faith in God cause you to consider your actions, choices, way of living, purpose and desires while you are yet alive on planet Earth? Where is your focus?

It’s a pretty weighty question and a decision must be made. Every one of us will die and stand before God. We need to look up and focus on what is really important.

Turn your eyes upon Jesus.
Look full in His wonderful face.
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.
Helen H. Lemmel, 1922
Lord Jesus, keep me caught up in You and not in the things of this world.
