December 9

[John Piper continues to remind us, we can’t separate the Jesus in the manger from the one on the cross. Read the December 9 devotional in The Dawning of Indestructible Joy before reading the post below.]

Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.

John 1:51

This was Jesus’s favorite designation for himself – Son of Man. …

Only those who had ears to hear broke through to the exalted meaning of the term Son of Man when Jesus used it.

– John Piper, The Dawning of Indestructible Joy, page 35, 36*

In the beginning, man was given dominion over all creation (Genesis 1:26). But we gave it away by obeying the serpent rather than God. Therefore, only a son of man could regain what man gave away.

What do you hear in His name Son of Man? exaltation? or humility? glory? or shame?

What comes to mind when you think of Jesus as fully man?

Lord Jesus, in Your stooping low to become one of us, You are most glorious and exalted. In all Your frailty, in Your perfect obedience to the Father, You made the way to restore life to those You created. Bless me with understanding of Your name Son of Man.
