December 15

[Today’s post follows the reading of December 15 in John Piper’s The Dawning of Indestructible Joy.]

When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.

Matthew 2:10

The gifts are intensifiers of desire for Christ himself in much the same way that fasting is. When you give a gift to Christ like this, it’s a way of saying… “You are my treasure, not these things.”

–John Piper, The Dawning of Industrictible Joy, page 51, 52*

I see a connection between Advent and Lent in John Piper’s words. Two seasons of waiting and preparation. One marked with gift giving, the other with fasting.

Both intended to increase our desire and bring us closer to the One born in a manger and hung on a cross.

What gifts have you purchased this season? How do you feel when you find the perfect gift for someone?

Have you considered what gift to bring to the manger?

How will the giving of this gift to Jesus bring you closer to Him?

Father, Your plan in Jesus is perfect. You marked the first Christmas season with gift giving through the kings. What gift can I bring to You? Something that will increase my love for You and intensify my desire to walk in Your way. Amen.
