Day 42

Resurrection and beyond…

John 20:3-10 NIV84

So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus’ head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)

Then the disciples went back to their homes…

Where were Peter and the other disciple (John) running? Why?

Even though the news of the empty tomb sounded like nonsense, two of the Eleven ran to check it out. How did the scene inside the tomb effect John? Where did the disciples go after they left the tomb?

John believed the tomb was empty, but beyond that he had no understanding of what he had seen or heard. Understanding deepens our faith and inspires us to share what we know with others. Do you understand everything you believe? Do you know why you believe what you believe? What can you do to begin taking steps toward greater understanding?

Father God, do not allow me to be content with belief that has no understanding. Bless me with understanding as I seek it in Scripture. Deepen my faith, ignite the desire and ability to share what I believe with others.

May my cry come before you, O Lord;
give me understanding according to your word.
Psalm 119:169 NIV84
