Beyond the Gospels: Revelation

Today’s Verses: Revelation 5

The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins. But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins. It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. —Hebrews 10:1-4

Old Testament law required sacrifices for sin, but it wasn’t permanent. Sacrifice upon sacrifice, year after year was made for the atonement of sin. This is how God’s people remained in relationship with Him.

God knew a final sacrifice must be made. His plan to provide the sacrifice of His Son was always in motion, and the law of the Old Testament points directly to it. Jesus, the Lamb of God, would be the final payment.

And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. —Hebrews 10:11-14

Jesus did what no other sacrifice could do. He perfected those who are being sanctified. He perfected me and you, once and for all.

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might
and honor and glory and blessing!

Jesus, thank You for sacrificing Yourself for me.
May I glorify You everyday with my life.
